Welcome to issue 108!

Hey, it’s Noemi. Great to have you here! And if you’re brand new, welcome to the Fresh Fonts newsletter. As usual, this time of the year is very busy for me. So, it feels all the sweeter to now have a little window of time to put together another issue gathering some interesting links and fonts for you. It’s evolved into a bit of a display fonts themed issue this one, I hope you like it!

Stay fresh! 😊✌️ — Noemi

Alternate set of thin punctuation 👌

Unicase capitals (3), small caps (SC), and reverse unicase characters (4).

BST Bazaine by British Standard Type

BST Bazaine is a contemporary grotesque marked by unusual contrast and compact letterforms. The design is based on a hand-lettered word, more specifically, the hand-lettered word ‘Bazaine’ that was found on a poster created by Win Crouwel for a Jean René Bazaine exhibition at Eindhoven’s Van Abbemuseum in 1959. BST Bazaine comes in seven weights (from Thin to Bold) with matching italics. Now, it is packed with OpenType Features — and this is where the fun comes in. Beyond stylistic ligatures, it offers alternate characters, a large set of arrows, circled numerals, small caps, and an alternate set of thin punctuation. Moreover, Bazaine comes with unicase capitals and reverse unicase characters: uppercase and lowercase letterforms that share the same height, allowing them to be mixed.

Get a lifetime commercial license for BST Bazaine when upgrading to our paid membership. You’ll get a license that allows for the following usage:

Fresh Releases

Hauss & Raum from Sharp Type

You might have seen this one already, but it definitely deserves a spot in today’s issue. The latest release from Sharp Type, Hauss & Raum, was designed by Justin Sloane and Huw Williams. The collection comprises two distinctive subfamilies: Hauss, a versatile sans-serif available in seven weights, and Raum, an experimental “display inktrap” design. Although this is an unconventional combination, both families are remarkably well-executed.

Wulkan 2.0 by Jan Estrada-Osmycki

First conceived nearly a decade ago by Polish-Mexican designer Jan Estrada-Osmycki, Wulkan Display has undergone continuous refinement to evolve into a comprehensive superfamily. The redesigned typeface now encompasses three distinct subfamilies: Display, Headline, and Text. Each subfamily boasts an impressive array of typographic features, including elegant italic swashes, small caps, and stylistic alternates.

Uxum by Julien Fesquet

Remember Uxum Grotesque, our Typeface of the Month from April 2020? The typeface has received a major update from designers Julien Fesquet, Vincent Lacombe, and Luc Chaissac. Now simply called Uxum, it features a redesigned look with an expanded glyph set, and additional support for the Cyrillic script. Plus, it comes with an impressive array of ligatures — some quite rare — that are definitely worth checking out.

Exact from Signal Type Foundry

Exact is a new, friendly editorial serif. The design is rooted in the structures of Times New Roman, with some unexpected influences. “When we drew the bold weights, we found a bit of 70s funk creeping in, a bit of ITC Grouch, and we left it there. The X-Light style came out a bit Olive Oyl, and we left that in there, too” explains designer Max Phillips. The typeface is named Exact “in honor of the old days of kerning with an X-Acto knife.”

Creative Spotlight

Petra Eriksson

This month, the spotlight is on Petra Eriksson, a visual artist and illustrator from Sweden. Playing with patterns and soft organic shapes, she creates bold imagery with bright colors. She’s particularly good at creating portraits, if you ask me, although her work is always beautifully crafted. And in case this may interest you, she has a few limited edition prints available for sale.

Goods

The ‘Untitled Folder Wallet’ by Nik Bentel. Available in different sizes and colors.

This t-shirt from Pangram Pangram made me laugh 😂
