With a new stylistic set for Gothic alternates 👌

MD Nichrome 2.0 by Mass-Driver

Font friends, rejoice! A new version of Nichrome is out. Originally released as a work-in-progress design through Future Fonts, MD Nichrome is a display typeface referencing the typography of paperback science fiction from the 70s and early 80s. It is available in eight weights, ranging from Infra to Ultra, with a matching set of obliques. There is also a variable font version, with two axes of variation (weight and slant). This new version comes with additional language support, including Vietnamese. There’s also a brand new stylistic set with gothic alternate characters, reminiscent of the arched shapes of classic 80s typefaces like Marvin. So you now have three stylistic sets to play with: geometric alternates, rounded alternates, and gothic alternates. Smooth 👌

Get a lifetime commercial license for MD Nichrome when upgrading to our paid membership. You’ll get a license for a company size of maximum 5 employees (including you) that allows for the following usage:

Fresh Releases

CoFo Holz by Contrast Foundry

Designed by Nikita Sapozhkov, CoFo Holz is an expressive serif typeface with unapologetic character. It counterbalances sharpness and softness, combining triangular wedge serifs with circular dots and terminals. This creates a design that is fresh, charming, and playful at the same time. CoFo Holz lands as a family of seven weights, ranging from Thin to Black — the most fun of which are definitely the heavier weights — plus as a variable font. It supports both Latin and Cyrillic.

Baumer Grotesk by Erkin Karamemet

Baumer Grotesk is the latest font release from Erkin Karamemet, whose work I had yet to share in this newsletter. Inspired by Neo-Grotesque design, the typeface combines clear, neutral forms with soft, rounded shapes. In other words, it provides functionality but with a friendly expression. Baumer Grotesk is available in four weights, on the heavier side of the range, from Regular to Black, with matching italics. It also comes with a large set of stylistic alternates, perfectly suited for use in branding and identity.

Icona Serif by Suitcase Type

Icona Serif is the new serif counterpart of Icona Sans (also a banger). Designed by Tomáš Brousil, Icona Serif is an editorial family in six weights, with matching italics. Personally, I love its texture at small and medium sizes. But if you’re tempted to use it in display sizes, make sure to consider its many alternate characters — they will probably convince you to do so. In addition, the typeface comes with broad language support, complete with Latin, Cyrillic, and Greek.

Numero.02 by [Black]Foundry

Designed by Solenn Bordeau, Numero.02 draws inspiration from the historic Gothic №2 typeface by the Keystone Type Foundry (1888-1917). The design of Numero.02 combines elements from the original Gothic №2 (such as the leg of the ‘R’, and the terminals of the ‘a’ and ‘t’) with more modern features (most visible in the ‘W’, ‘N’, and ‘M’). Numero.02 comes in eight weights, with its lightest and heaviest, Hairline and Poster, specifically designed for titling purposes.

Creative Spotlight

Balmer Hählen

Founded by Priscilla Balmer and Yvo Hählen, Balmer Hählen is a small graphic design studio based here in Lausanne, Switzerland. You might have already heard their names as their work has travelled far beyond the land of Helvetica, gaining them international recognition. For this project, called Statement edition, they’ve teamed up with Swiss printer Sonderegger to create a set of five different printed cards — each with unique textures and striking visual reflections.
