113 / Fresh Fonts x Contemporary Type 🤜🤛
A special selection from Contemporary Type.
Hello everyone 👋
Here’s your monthly dose of great new typefaces from small and independent foundries around the world! Here in Switzerland, Spring has arrived, which inspired me to give this newsletter’s design a little refresh. I hope you like it!
More importantly, today’s issue is guest curated by Alex Slobzheninov, a type designer and curator who runs the Instagram account Contemporary Type and now also the font shop of the same name. I’m excited to share that our Typeface of the Month, FL Prefere, is one of his latest creations — a unique design that won’t leave you indifferent.
From the community:
🦄 David Matos designed Unicorn, a display typeface that consists of two super-condensed styles. He’s offering you 30% off if you’d like to use it — simply apply the promo code FreshUnicorn at checkout.
📚 Award-winning data visualization designer Nadieh Bremer published a book called CHART: Designing Creative Data Visualizations from Charts to Art. In it, she shares personal techniques to make your charts look unique, memorable, and beautiful.
🇵🇹 Joana Corker used SFT Schrifted Serif in a video showcasing posters from the time of the Portuguese Revolution. The video is part of the cultural exhibition “50 Years of Posters” hosted by the Gil Vicente Academic Theatre (TAGV) in Coimbra, Portugal.
Stay fresh! 😊✌️ — Noemi

Typeface of the Month

Prefere from Flight Mode
Font people, rejoice! There’s a cool new type foundry on the block. Called Flight Mode, it is a one-person foundry run by designer Alex Slobzheninov, who is also the founder of Contemporary Type, an Instagram account you probably know given its massive following. Along with the launch of his independent foundry, Alex is introducing a curated font shop under the same name, Contemporary Type.
As for Prefere, our members’ favourite from the Flight Mode catalogue, it’s definitely not your ordinary typeface. The design emerged from aligning elements along an imaginary horizontal line, resulting in flat counters and brutal geometry. Combined with its tight spacing, Prefere provides the perfect recipe for attention-grabbing headlines, posters, and websites. It comes in five weights, from Light to Heavy, with corresponding italics. There is also a variable font, which is included in the download pack.
For a limited time, get a license for FL Prefere when upgrading to our paid membership. You’ll get a license for a company size of maximum 5 employees (including yourself) and a total audience of maximum 50k followers/subscribers. This license allows for the following usage:
The complete FL Prefere font family (10 font styles + variable font)
Unlimited desktop use, web use, and app use within your company (this does not apply to client work, for which your client will need their own license)
Use in video, social media, newsletters, and other channels (as long as your total audience, of all these channels combined, does not exceed 50k followers/subscribers)
The license doesn’t expire, so you can keep on using FL Prefere in your projects forever — even after you cancel your membership.
✌️ To be eligible for this license, your company or organization must have five or fewer employees, including yourself. Additionally, your company’s total audience reach across all channels combined (including but not limited to social media accounts and email newsletters) must not exceed 50,000 followers and/or subscribers.
By upgrading to our paid membership, you’ll receive a license to use a new typeface each month, unless you cancel your subscription, which you can do at any time. More info on our paid membership and FAQ on the Typeface of the Month offered as its main perk.

Fresh Releases
States from Fatype
States is a work-in-progress typeface consisting of two subfamilies: States Grotesque and States Rounded. Each family is currently available in a single style (Medium). States Rounded, perhaps the more distinctive of the two, comes with a wide range of alternate characters, including crossbar-free capital letters (A, E, and G). The variable font is also pretty cool — it includes both subfamilies connected through a “Pressure” axis.
I love the balance of the opposites — mechanical yet lively, modern yet rooted in history, rigid yet softly blurred.
Magic from HAL Typefaces
Magic is a confident and dynamic geometric sans-serif. The collection includes three subfamilies, each with a different x-height: Low, Mid, and High. Each subfamily brings its own distinct flavour and contains six weights plus corresponding obliques. All font styles are included in the variable font, which allows for graceful x-height animations.
Varying x-heights is an under-explored territory of typographic expressions, isn’t it? Might use some Magic and imagination.
Gregory Poster from TypeMates
The latest release from our friends at TypeMates is a display typeface designed by Jakob Runge in collaboration with George Triantafyllakos and Seryozha Rasskazov. Blending sharp angles with gentle curves, Gregory Poster is an intriguing flared serif with a distinctive personality. No compromises were made on language support, with Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, and Vietnamese available. Packed with OpenType features, Gregory Poster comes in seven weights, with a charming italic. Pure beauty!
👉 Gregory Poster Extra Bold is currently 70% off! A basic Desktop or Web license for this font style will cost you only €15 (plus applicable taxes). This special offer ends April 30, 2025.
Hublot from Lift Type
Hublot features both rounded shapes and triangular endings, skilfully confined into monospaced proportions by designer Sandrine Nugue. The typeface comes in five weights, from Light to Bold, with matching italics. The family is complemented by a standalone Display cut with distinct letterforms, most notable in the ‘a’ and ‘e’.
A lovely take on the monospaced genre with the extravagant Display cut being the cherry on top.

Ginestra by &Rosàs
An initiative from his coworkers at &Rosàs, in collaboration with type designer Iñigo Jerez from Extra Type, Ginestra pays tribute to Nacho Ginestra, the agency’s Creative Director, who tragically passed away in February 2022. “Nacho liked the idea that a typeface, in addition to characters, had pictograms. That is why we added 23 pictograms with some of his most characteristic faces and reactions.” You can download and use the Black weight for free, but not in commercial projects.
